The Ultimate Guide to Retail Lighting
In the world of retail, where the competition is fierce and first impressions are crucial, the power of effective lighting cannot be overstated. At Prolight Design, we’ve had the privilege of working with some of the world’s leading retailers, including Marks & Spencer, JD Sports, River Island, and Lush.

Changing Room Lighting for Retail
An often-overlooked element of retail lighting, however, key for customer experience. Changing room lighting is arguably one of the most important elements of retail lighting. If the lighting is harsh and unflattering, ultimately, the customer won’t be purchasing any clothes. In fact, as many as 40% of customers will abandon a purchase because of an unsatisfactory dressing room experience.
A high CRI, with a hint of warmth
A little like Goldilocks’ porridge, ensuring the colour temperature is not too warm, not too cool, but just right, so that the dressing room is neither clinical nor akin to lighting in your home.
Look at the interior
Lighting isn’t the be-all, and end-all to the dressing room experience, ensuring that the physical environment is inviting also plays an important role. A design that reflects your brand whilst also being neutral enough to not distract away from the outfit, the same applies to the lighting.
Consider mirror surrounds
Surrounding the mirror in the changing room with high CRI light will eradicate unflattering shadows, and also offer soft light that makes the customer look their best. In fact, our mirror surrounds for River Island were rated 9/10 for “flatter-factor”.
Improve shopper’s experience
In a climate where retail is struggling, it is important to not overlook the importance of the fitting room experience. The fitting room is where most purchasing decisions are made, so ensuring that it is optimised for the customer is a core element to retail design.

LED Linear Lighting for Retail and Commercial Spaces
The future is linear.
Linear lighting is set to become a firm favourite in retail and commercial spaces, as the possibilities are truly endless.
Whether simplicity or something bespoke and unique is the desired effect, LED Linear can fulfil even the most complex of design briefs. Adding visual interest and creating a talking point, bespoke shapes such as triangles, circles or even abstract scattered suspended luminaires, there is something for every space big or small. A completely versatile product that can be suspended, surface mounted or recessed in a variety of finishes to suit bespoke requirements.
All of our linear lighting products are manufactured with integral drivers, we believe this is an element that sets our product above the rest. As there is no remote driver it means that each luminaire is individual, making assembly and maintenance a breeze.
Unsatisfied with the quality and price of other LED Linear lighting on the market, we created our own space in our workshop purely for manufacturing LED Linear luminaires. Tried and tested, we believe we produce the best LED Linear lighting solutions on the market. As we manufacture our own LED Linear products in-house, this enables us to customise every element of the final result, ensuring that our customers are supplied with a first-class product. Not only that, as a member of the Lighting Industry Association we can ensure that every product we supply meets industry standards in performance, quality, safety and design.
Linear lighting shouldn’t be restricted to just ceilings! A corridor, escalator area or even the floor can be transformed into something spectacular through the use of linear lighting.

Making The Switch | Schuh LED Upgrade
For #EnergySavingWeek we’d like to put the spotlight on the benefits of switching to LED lighting, not only for cost saving purposes but the reduction in energy usage. Reinforcing the fact that every small change made in energy use does cumulate towards a big shift towards helping the environment.
Prolight Design has worked with Schuh since 2000, we pride ourselves on long-term relationships with our customers. We supplied lighting in 2011 using CDM technology, Schuh contacted us looking they were looking to upgrade their lighting to reduce their energy costs and usage. An evident benefit of our long-term relationship with Schuh was that we already knew what the existing fittings were and enabled us to seamlessly upgrade the fittings by creating LED versions of the existing fittings.
We calculated that there would be a 46% overall reduction in wattage with the transfer to LED fittings, with a payback of 3.1 years. A fantastic result through a fairly quick change!
2018 Round-Up
We look back on some of our highlights from 2018.
What a year 2018 has been for Prolight! Here are some of our highlights from the past year.
At the start of the year, we created our Facebook, Instagram and Twitter accounts (we know- a bit late to the party!) and if you’re not already following us on Social Media- be sure to follow us.
We started off the year with JD Gym in Cardiff, a perfect ode to the new year, new you. Their self-proclaimed game-changing gyms are truly that, we believe that the lighting was a core element to creating the inspiring atmosphere that makes these gyms different. Be sure to look out for the new JD Gym opening in Wythenshawe that we’ve been working on!
We saw a project we’d been working on since 2017 finally come to completion with River Island Milton Keynes in April this year.
In May the doors opened to Smiggle’s brand new UK flagship 2-story store on London’s Oxford Street.
In November, Kids Cavern’s flagship store opened in Liverpool, arguably one of our favourites of the year, the hexagon light feature is the perfect eye-catching element of the store.
To round off the year, Beswick Stone in Cirencester had a transformation with a large expansion, we feel that the lighting for this project is a real example of how lighting can transform a space, and also show off products to their full potential.
We’re looking forward to seeing what 2019 will bring!
Missguided | Stratford: Behind The Scenes
Bespoke lighting solutions for Missguided’s flagship store
As the year comes to a close, we have found ourselves looking back at some of our favourite projects and Missguided is definitely one of them! Arguably this project involved the most amount of bespoke lighting fixtures we have ever done in our 27 years of business.
One of our favourite parts of the project was the textured ceiling panels, that of which aren’t too distant from the initial designs that were briefed to us, to the drawings we put together and then the final product. The fixtures were created using sheet metal where the hole designs were laser cut into the sheet metal, and Ventures LED high performance, ultra-thin and lightweight 600 x 600/1200 x 600 panels were placed behind to create the textured lighting effect.
In true Prolight style, we were also able to fulfil some last-minute additions by adding in some Linear lights to add some interest to an empty wall.
