JD Gyms | Xercise4Less Upgrades
Whilst the gyms have been closed, we’ve been busy.
Over the last 6 months, we have worked on over 20 JD Gym transformations from the Xercise4Less Gyms estate across the UK. All turned around in record time to ensure they are ready for the 12th April reopening.
These transformations involved a complete refit and reconfiguration to showcase what we have all come to expect from a gym.
An iconic feature of the JD Gyms is the set of suspended arrows above the free weights area, manufactured using our TRON system.
A creative use of colour is also a key design feature of the gyms, a way to identify each section of the gym. Green being the weights area, we used our track-mounted Casa GA16 with a green filter to create an energising atmosphere.

Zero Latency VR | Wembley, London
Based in Wembley’s Boxpark, we worked with Zero Latency on their second opening in the UK.
John Lilley, CEO of MeetspaceVR said, “We’re thrilled to bring the world’s most advanced social gaming experience, Zero Latency, to London.
“Free roam VR is the future of group social entertainment attractions – we believe gaming is better when played together. The adrenaline-pumping experience caters to a wide audience from avid-gamers to first-time visitors.
“Wembley plays host to the world’s biggest sporting tournaments and so it feels like the perfect place to launch the future of mass competitive Player-to-Player eSport gaming.
“We are looking forward to opening our doors in the UK’s capital in October and unleashing a horde of virtual zombies on visitors.”
To reflect the fun, contemporary environment, and also their branding, we designed and manufactured quirky asymmetric shaped lighting using our bespoke led linear. The result added visual interest and an element of fun, creating focal points throughout the space. Bespoke lighting helps reinforce your branding, and these do just that!
JD Gyms | Bolton
Last week we went to visit the brand new JD Gym in Bolton, we were blown away by the final result. This is one of many JD Gyms we have worked on, all slightly unique in their own way and this one is no different. JD Gyms pride themselves on refusing to compromise on quality, style and member’s experience of the gym.
Gym lighting should be there to enhance your surroundings and your workout, and the lighting here does just that. Whether it be the custom-made triangle LED Linear luminaires, or the halo lit mirrors great for perfecting post gym selfies- all elements contribute towards the incredible atmosphere within the gym and is what sets it apart from other gym chains.
Our favourite element of this project has been the bespoke triangle LED Linear luminaires in the function and lift area of the gym. These are entirely custom-made, featuring two elements, using an LED extrusion and brackets mounted to the extrusion to add in the additional spotlights, creating more of a focal point to the area and depth.

JD Gyms | Cardiff
They say that there is finally a sporting culture in the UK where people enjoy being fit and taking care of themselves. JD Gym Cardiff makes itself a new staple within that.
It’s often, that something within design comes around and sets a bar that becomes the norm. We’ve mentioned how Missguided refused to conform to the idea that concrete retail is dead. The same method applies here, the influx of ‘ultra cheap’ and ’24-hour gyms’ took the beauty out of how we gym. The brief for JD Gyms cleverly created a personality and atmosphere through lighting.
Call us biased, but lighting is the best part of JD Gym Cardiff. Each room has its own character so let us explore the importance of this. When you go to a certain place for a certain reason, you’re not only there for that but for everything that surrounds it. It sounds complicated but it really isn’t. You’re there for the experience involved. In this sense, it could be the spin room. Yes, a high-intensity workout, but your surroundings should do more. The lighting, for example, it should be colourful and intense. That’s just what we have done, a blue striking backlight that screams ‘hey check me out don’t I make you feel like you should spin till you’re within an inch of your life?’ What makes this gym great in terms of modern design is its versatility. Of course, it looks great, but so does everything until you get bored of it. Its workout studio answers that question. It allows you to change the colour of the room at the touch of a button. Just like that, design that works for you on how you’re feeling at any given time.
We have a gym that refuses to conform to the idea that convenience is more important than substance. Here we see a gym that provides everything but most importantly a design that makes you want to be there. Just like that standards are re-evaluated. Bars are set.
