In those days we ran the business out of one 6ft x 4ft garden shed in Swindon, not the most glamorous of venues it has to be said. But every company has to start somewhere.
Business grew steadily: one-off contracts and bespoke jobs soon meant we needed to leave the shed behind for pastures new. Our next home was nestled within the old Triumph Lingerie Factory, again in Swindon. Stockings and light fittings aren’t necessarily a natural fit, but we took what space we could and it served its purpose well..
The business grew steadily over the next twelve months, we were able to employ a secretary, and moved again, this time into the brick-arched cellar of an old dairy at Dauntsey Banks, Nr Lyneham. Damp and dingy are the best words to describe that unit. This new location actually gave us the space we needed to cater to larger orders, and it was here that our long association with River Island – our first major contract – started. Our first order with them was for the manufacture of one lighting head. We’re now their exclusive lighting supplier nationwide.
River Island was great business for us, so much so that they remained our sole customer for a number of years. Despite the great relationship we forged with them, we realised that was a dangerous game. In 1999 we took a step back and worked out a strategy to spread our customer base. Within a month or so, we had won New Look’s lighting contract. Having two huge high-street retailers as clients certainly helped open more doors and as opportunities came, we found ourselves searching for bigger, better premises again. That’s when we bought a brand new unit in Devizes, our home to this day – designing and building a custom office warehouse layout from scratch.
From shed to your favourite high-street shop: our lights, fittings and designs can be found in the likes of Burberry, Schuh, Lush, JD Sports, KFC to name just a few. Quite a trip from a backyard in Swindon to a £5million turnover last year. Every positive step along the way has been made possible by our passion for creating the best lighting solutions for every single one of our clients, and the hard-work and dedication of our incredible team.
We’re a friendly bunch so if you have any questions, don’t hesitate to get in touch. And why not come and meet us too?
